"Artist Takeover" is a series of projects that invites artists to take over the bookstore for two weeks. Artists are granted the freedom to curate the space and the book collection in any way they see fit to emphasize particular topics or issues. From this weekend, we will host our first edition of Takeover focused on South East Asian publishing practices. Limestone Deposits makes connection to the historic use of limestone in lithographic printing, specifically in South East Asia. Deposits from caves and quarries across the region supported the more central point of Singapore in the printing of publications, then distributed back across the neighboring archipelagos. It is this significant connection to our local limestone that we consider the region and its print and publishing culture.

As a part of Limestone Deposits (from the archipelago), we are very excited to invite Nazir Harith, the editor and co-found of SVARA, calling in from Kuala Lumpur to Limestone Books to share the context and background of the journal and his wider arts and publishing practice. Jurnal SVARA is a quarterly arts journal from Malaysia focused on arts and culture from the region with an emphasis on literature.

ASIA-ART-ACTIVISM: Experiments in Care and Collective Disobedience is a polyvocal collection of 18 essays by leading academics, artists, curators and researchers who address urgent questions of the complexities of UK Black/Asian race relations and migrations, in parallel with global Black/Asia political entanglements and tensions, reflections on the rise of anti-Asian/migrant sentiment in the UK in relation to the ‘Hostile environment’ and the weaponisation of the Covid-19 pandemic.
